›Status Quo – In Search of the Forth Chord

›Forth Chord Records

cover

Quo have been one of the most infuriating bands in my life, playing some stunning live shows while churning out albums that are often so piss poor they make me want to cry. A few years back they returned to their roots and released the great Heavy Traffic album which for many was finally the album they’d been waiting for for so many desperate years. Unfortunately though that pleasure was short lived as the following The Party ain’t over Yet was a huge step backwards into the cheesy pop territory that Quo have been wallowing in for the last two decades.

With the news that Pip Williams (the man who many blame for helping to destroy Quo) was back in the production chair I was not expecting much from In Search of the Forth Chord so there was no way I could be disappointed, and I’m glad to say I’m not, in fact I’m almost pleasantly surprised.

In Search of the Forth Chord is not a return to the classic heads down no nonsense boogie Quo that I love so much, but there is enough good stuff on it to make me sit up, take notice and enjoy it. Opening number The Beginning of the End is a real belter with a sound to it reminiscent of Quo in the early eighties, while the Rhino Edwards penned Bad News and Gravy Train could come right out of the golden early 70’s era of Quo, and make me even forgive Rhino for his vocal efforts on the latter! Yes there is still some throw away rubbish on there, but what Quo seemed to have done is come out with an album that will at least at times please nearly everyone in their wide and varied fanbase and on album 33 you have to say that it is a job reasonably well done.

6/10
