›Three - The End Is Begun

There's a reason that Three were picked to open up for bands like Porcupine Tree and Cohead & Cambria. Despite the fact that this New York band resides on Metal Blade Records, they are predominately a prog outfit at heart with a penchant for pop music. The End is Begun follows Wake Pig, and continues the band's development as far as creating catchy, melodic songs littered with atmosphere, symphonic soundcapes, and hard rock guitars. Influences from Rush, Muse, Angel, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree, Coheed & Cambria, Ambrosia and The Beatles, can be heard throughout The End is Begun.

While the majority of the band contributes backing vocals, giving these songs a very rich sound, it's the expressive voice of Joey Eppard who really shines throughout this CD. His soaring voice propels tunes like "Bleeding Me Home" and "My Divided Falling", and his knack for an almost Brit-pop delivery really shines on the lovely "Shadow Play". While Three are essentially a prog band, there is a distinct lack of instrumentals/guitar solos - Three are more about the songs, of electric and acoustic guitars, synths, bass, and drums. The tightness of the arrangements and compatibility between the players though is stunning throughout. Occasionally they rock out a little, like on "These Iron Bones", "Battle Cry", and "Diamon in the Crush", but there's nothing remotely metal here. End result is a very strong poppy progressive rock album that should appeal to a wide variety of listeners and continue to grow Three's fanbase.
