›Pay*Ola – 77 Miles E.P.
Pay*Ola Records

Back on there home turf of Northern Ireland Pay*Ola have had the honour of supporting many a great band, whether it be old boogie merchants Status Quo, sleaze rock kings Buckcherry or even super group Audioslave, and after discovering the band through myself and frontman Phillip McCarroll’s combined love of Quo I can easily see why this band have gone down so well in their homeland, and deserve a shot at things on a larger scale.
Pay*Ola are a very classy band who veer to the pop/rock side of music like the likes of Cheap Trick, Silver Sun, Kiss and even The Wildhearts. They write infectious songs with big hooks that get into your head and stay there. The 77 Miles E.P. follows on from debut album Try Anything Twice giving three further examples of the bands fine craft, with second number Flat Earth being the stand out track from the bunch. A fourth number Before you Go from the aforementioned Try Everything Twice is tagged onto the end as a bonus track giving you a taste of the album if you missed it first time round. After playing this E.P. to death since getting it, it has managed to get me even keener to see Pay*Ola live, where if Status Quo’s Rhino Edwards is led to be believed they up an already high standard.
So if you like your pop/rock music played with real passion you’d do yourself a big favour checking out either this E.P. or the Try everything Twice album that preceded it. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.
8/10
