›Dimmu Borgir + Amon AmarthManchester, Academy 2: 30/09/2007

It’s less than six months since I’d seen Amon Amarth on their own headline tour so I was surprised that they were announced as the support for Dimmu Borgir. I’m not complaining though and neither were the crowd as it was almost a 50/50 mix of Dimmu Borgir shirts and Amon Amarth shirts. Most of the songs were from their current album. Considering this was a support slot and the short amount of time that they had, Amon Amarth rocked the place as if it was their own gig. Let’s hope it’s not too long before they’re headlining venues this size..

9/10.

The fact that Dimmu Borgir can play such a large tour of the UK let alone sell out a venue as large as the Academy 2 is amazing and shows just how popular black metal has become in Britain. The intro starts and two daemons walk on stage and the band walk on one by one. It’s surprising how much Dimmu Borgir have fitted onto the small stage. Not only is a huge drum kit on the right but also a massive keyboard set up on the left and in between these are two large torches. It’s just incredible..

When the band starts playing the whole place goes mental. The only problem is the sound. It seems too quiet and the guitars seem to drop out from time to time. However this is only a minor niggle and it doesn’t detract from the bands brutal set. What a set list it is. It’s fantastic with a mix of old songs such as the awesome ‘Puritania’ the very old ‘Spellbound’ new songs from the ‘In Sorete Diablo’. This gig, despite some of the sound problems, was black metal at its best!.

9/10.

Dimmu Borgir hit the stage promptly at 9 o clock, promising a full metal ending to the weekend for 1,000 black metal fans. The opening double-header of “Progenies of the Great Apocalyspe” and “Puritania” comes welcome to the rabid audience who have been waiting a long time for the band to come back to the UK. Indeed, the feverish and sometimes maniacal support is reflected by the band who seem genuinely pleased (despite how it might go against their image) to be back on these shores after a 3 year break.

This is shown in the level of performance tonight. Despite some production letting them down on albums, Dimmu perform to obviously the best of their capabilities and come out sounding awesome. They are tight as a gnat’s arse, pull off their songs with great capability, and despite this audience being roughly one sixtieth of their Wacken performance in August, they don’t let this nor the small stage hamper their raw energy and blatant power when it comes to the live environment.

This reviewer is not one of their greatest fans, but those who were (a significant proportion of the audience) must have felt they had experienced one of the best 90-minute periods of their life.

9.5/10
