›Juliette and the Licks

›Barracuda, Newquay – 21st August 2007

Juliette Lewis, in knee high stiletto boots, clad in skin tight PVC trousers and a tight white vest and the customary feather in her hair.

I was gonna leave this review there as that alone was enough for me to go home happy, but as much as the unusual charms of Miss Lewis appeal to me a Licks gig is a lot more than just a one woman show. Behind Juliette you have one very tight rock n roll band of the highest order who build a great platform for her to perform from, and perform she does.

Kicking off with a slow brooding Inside the Cage gets the night off to a slow almost false start and it isn’t until Smash and Grab crashes in that things really kick off. Juliette Lewis is a fine front woman and if Iggy Pop was out there in female form she would be him. Strutting, twisting, sneering and oozing sex appeal she commands the stage and crowd alike giving just as much as she expects back, and on this night she certainly got it back. The only problem was that this was in a nightclub, with nightclub bouncers, or should I say beefed up idiots. These meatheads had no idea what to do with a rock n roll crowd and there ‘kill first ask questions afterwards’ attitude does take the edge off the gig for those down the front trying to enjoy themselves.

However not being down the front I was just treated to a great night of music, and even the cheesy disco classic Hot Stuff is turned into a complete rock monster and sees random ‘jazz hands’ breaking out all round the room by blokes who should have known better! Closing number Hot Kiss is greeted with a huge cheer which is only equalled when Miss Lewis throws herself into the crowd and surfs right to the back of the hall, over my head and then back again returning to the stage.

All in all The Licks left Newquay a very happy place, with only the antics of some over zealous meatheads taking the sheen of a great night.

8/10
