Virgin Megastore, Manchester, Monday 27th August

Now this was a weird one. On the release date of their debut album for Earache Records ‘Enter the Grave’, Huddersfield thrashers Evile played a teatime slot downstairs and Manchester’s Virgin Megastore. Some ‘veteran’ fans I’d been talking to noted how surreal this was, given their history of watching the band, and also the fact that there were so many youngsters in the audience! All were in agreement however that it shaped up to be a good gig and promised great things for Evile’s future.

When the quartet hit the stage to a rapturous ovation, they didn’t disappoint. Book-ended by older songs ‘Thrasher’ and ‘Enter the Grave’, this set gave them the opportunity to play some of the new tracks on the album, such as ‘Schizophrenic’ and ‘Armoured Assault’, all of which sounded powerful and catchy in this environment. The one negative thing I picked up on is that because they only had 30 minutes on stage, they left out what became their signature tune, ‘Killer From The Deep’ which harked back to their early days. This may or may not be a statement of progression for the band, however the set did not suffer, and they may be reinstating it on longer sets!

The strangest part of the evening was leaving the store at just past 6pm, still in late August daylight to get the train back to Lancaster (and my pre-birthday piss up) with the last of the commuters. Being more an attender of festivals and gigs where my band plays nowadays, I’m used to hanging around and catching many performances, so I felt I was missing something when walking out. This is why, despite their top performance, it was only a good gig overall.

8/10
