›Joe Bonamassa
›The Wharf, Tavistock – 2nd August 2007
Who the fuck is Joe Bonamassa I hear you say.
I was actually asking the same question when some friends invited me along to see him, and when I was told he was an American Blues guitarist I wasn’t really that keen on going, as Blues in it’s ‘I woke up this morning’ form doesn’t really appeal to me hugely.
Joe Bonamassa is a different kettle of fish though. Hailing from upstate New York Joe started to learn his craft at the tender age of four, and by the age of eight was playing like a veteran and putting his own twist onto things. The twist is that to my ears Joe is a rocker and his brand of Blues sways more to the Gary Moore end of the spectrum, but it’s even better.
Arriving at the venue which sold out weeks in advance without tickets wasn’t the best of starts to the evening, but luckily we got in eventually with only minutes to spare before Joe took the stage. From the minute he did start though I spent most of the evening with my jaw on the floor, as his guitar work is simply awesome and his band are a set of superb musicians who play almost telepathically sharing knowing glances in drawn out jams keeping the whole thing faultless.
I would like to give more information as to what was played, but apart from a blistering cover of ZZ Tops Just got Paid I don’t know. What I do know though, is next time Joe Bonamassa and band are in driving distance, I will be going as this gig unexpectedly turned out to be a real gem.
9/10
