›Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted

12 years is a very long time, especially so in music. When a musical partner hood has been inactive for so long the majority of people would consider it to be lost forever. Never more justifiably so than in the case of the Cavalera brothers, Max and Iggor the duo who in murky darkness of 80’s Brazil delved into hell and unleashed Sepultura, a band that was clearly influenced by the thrash metal movement of the USA but which had a new twist. With extremely unique vocals and guitar style and a form of song-writing that would only be seen in one other musical brother hood, (anyone heard of Pantera?) whereby the guitar and drums provided such a dominating musical force that it left only ruins in its wake. However good things don’t last forever and on a fateful night on December 13th 1996 after a storming end at Brixton Academy to their ‘Roots’ tour Sepultura would be changed…forever. The reasons for Max Cavalera’s departure from the band have become musical legend. What followed was Max’s own project, Soulfly and a new vocalist for Sepultura but for the fans it would never be the same. Then in June 2006, the world witnessed something which had been written off as pure fantasy the Cavalera brothers appeared on stage and performed ‘Roots Bloody Roots’ together. Over the next 18 months the metal world waited with baited breath for news of a reunion then in late 2007 Max and Iggor (who departed from Sepultura in January 2006) recorded a new album, with Joe Duplantier (Gojira) and Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) under the name ‘Cavalera Conspiracy’ the release date for ‘Inflikted’ was announced as March 24th 2008.
Here we are, ‘Inflikted’ has been released to the world and we stand back in awe of just how much power and aggression the brothers have left in them. To place the album somewhere along the Sepultura timeline it is perhaps closest to ‘Chaos AD’. The title track begins with a staccato introduction before launching into a full-scale assault upon the ears. This is then increased with the speeding into to ‘Sanctuary’ and then ‘Black Ark’ which rings of the ‘Roots’ era – Sepultura. The albums undisputed highlight is ‘Bloodbrawl’ a heavy metal masterpiece and one that blows away the cynics and conforms the doubters.
Two things are clear from this album, firstly the brothers are truly reunited and with a scheduled appearance at Download they will hopefully restore some of the festivals metal credentials. Secondly they have not lost their ability to make great music, it is said that wine grows better with age, in many cases, as with this duo so does song writing. Whilst this is not designed to overshadow any of the music created by either brother in their time apart what can be said is that they have many more great things to come. Now for the burning question, will Sepultura reform with the classic line-up? It’s anyone’s guess but whilst it may seem more realistic now it certainly won’t be for a while. 9/10
