› Huron - Filthy Sex Metal

Despite lifting the name of their debut from a Wolfsbane era Blaze Bayley t-shirt, Plymouth’s Huron sound nothing like Tamworth’s finest, but they do sound like they could really be well on the road to becoming Plymouth’s finest.
Huron has risen from the ashes of Plymouths finest metal band The Southpaw Jinx and Plymouth’s best covers band Cypher, and after a few spins of ‘Filthy Sex Metal’ you can see why these boys have got together. Huron build on the foundations of what Neil Simms laid down with The Jinx, but with ex Cypher members Shaun Palmer on vocals and Stumps on drums something else has been thrown into the mix. Not only do Huron bring the Pantera/Corrosion of Conformity crunch that Neil Simms had with The Jinx, but now there is more depth to their sound, drawing on influences from Alice and Chains through to Masters of Reality.
It’s the tracks on ‘Filthy Sex Metal’ where all their influences really pull together that Huron really kick back and sound in their element. The Southern, (South Western?), Boogie Metal of ‘Snakes down her Back’ sees the band injecting some real swagger and confidence into things, with Simms ripping out a cracking solo, and the likes of ‘Your View from the Sun’, ‘Children of the Southern Moon’ and album highlight ‘It Came a Calling’ see vocalist Shaun Palmer using his great set of pipes to their full potential, where perhaps on a few other tracks like opener Muzzle the Wolf he sounds like he is holding back and limiting himself to a certain style.
In Huron the South West of England could at last have a metal band to really be proud of, as with a debut as strong as ‘Filthy Sex Metal’ is, Huron have a great chance to build on it and really bring Janner Metal to the world stage!
8/10.
