› Fish - The M Club, Crew 27/3/08

I’ve been quite exited about this gig. Not just because I’ve never seen Fish before but because the M club is a new venue and it’s always nice going to a gig in a venue that I’ve never been to. It’s a fairly large oval shaped club that looks like it’s a converted bingo or dance hall. As you enter, it’s still got that new smell to it.

The first band on were called Stone Soul River. When they walked on stage nobody realised it was the support band, they just looked like a couple of roadies with an acoustic guitar and an electric bass, The reason they were stripped down was because the drummer was ill so rather than cancel the gig they decided to play an acoustic set. I’m so glad they did because they were awesome. The musicianship was incredible. It was so good I bought the album. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for them in the future.

Next up were an Irish band called Glyder. They were ok but after what I had just heard they seemed below par. I’ve heard a lot worse bands but after listening to the inspirational acoustic music before it just seemed wrong and out of place. I’m sure they’re a good band and they definitely had fans in the audience that were rooting for them. They’re also on their second album but they just didn’t do anything for me. If they had played first then maybe it would’ve been a different story.

At last it was the moment we’ve all been waiting for and some members of the audience had been waiting much longer than others as this gig was due to take place back in November. It had to be postponed due to Fish’s guitarist having a heart attack. The main section of this gig that I was looking forward to was hearing Fish sing songs from the new 13TH Star album and he didn’t disappoint. A lot of the press are hailing this recent album as Fish’s defining solo album. All I can say is it’s one of the main records that I’ve been playing for the last six months!

Not only is the music fantastic but Fish’s showmanship is incredible. A man at the front passed Fish a pint and he recognised him from when he met him earlier in the day. Fish should really be in stand up. In the middle of the gig he told a story of when he was on tour in Amsterdam. The way he delivered the story was just amazing and he had the whole audience in fits of laughter. Not only did he have the crowd laughing but when he played the title track from 13th Star he got them to be so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.

The main part of the show finished with the Merrilion song Incommunicado and after that he played three encores. During one of them a roadie came on dressed as a white rabbit and danced around the stage. It even looked like fish didn’t know about this end of tour prank but he joined in the fun and danced around with everyone.

This was an inspirational gig and it was wonderful to see and hear songs from an album (13Th Star), that I’ve had on continual play for months, played live. I’ll definitely go and see Fish play live again and I’ll definitely be back to the M Club in Crew!

10/10
