› Debauchery - Thomas

Hi, first off… How did the band start up way back in 2002?
Hi, I recorded the first Debauchery record Kill Maim Burn at the end of 2002. After that I searched for a live crew and we started touring...first with Hate Plow, then with Napalm Death in the same year. Nothing changed ‘til today. I record an album every year or so and we play as many concerts and tour as much as possible.
The album artwork is fantastic, who does it?
It’s from Adrian Smith. He has done a lot of the Warhammer stuff for Games Workshop. He is one of my favourite artists. He has made three designs for me, the coverartwork, the Butcher Of Bitches t-shirt design and the Butcherman inside of the digi pack. By the way, he is from the UK .
What do you attribute you success over the past 6 years to?
Hard work. There is nothing for free, if you want something you have to take it.
What are your long-term aims as a band?
I have no real masterplan or something like that, I just rock on.
In your promo photos and live shows you all wear really realistic bloody make up. How long does that take to do and who does it? Is it difficult to perform wearing it?
It takes about 5 seconds to be drenched in the shit...cleaning up is much harder. We used some real intestines for life shows and band pictures in 2003. But it was difficult to bring them with us, so we only use blood now, most of the time artificial blood. It looks more realistic and brutal, real blood just looks like brown water.
Who are your influences?
There are a lot of cool bands, but most of all I like AC/DC, Judas Priest, Manowar and Rammstein. But I never tried to make a sound like one of those bands. I just make my own version of Heavy Metal.
Which band would you most compare yourself to?
Oh I don’t know, I think Debauchery is special, but many compare us with Six Feet Under. But I hate it, we use keyboards, blastbeats, samples and accoustic guitars. SFU don't do this.
Do you write your own music?
Ah....of course. Who should do it for me?
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Most of my inspiration I’ve got from the Warhammer worlds, I like the dark and brutal ideas of the Games Workshop guys. There are a lot of cool novels and backroundbooks and stuff like that. The best author I think is Graham McNeill, but there are other very good one too.
How would you say the German music scene differs from what we’re used to here in the UK?
I have no idea, how is the scene in the UK ? I never toured there. I was in London some years ago, but it was before I even started with Debauchery, I was just a tourist.
You write songs in English, what’s the reason for that?
English sounds cooler then German, ok, perhaps you see it another way.
Being on the road a lot, do you find that you miss people at home? Do you find it difficult travelling a lot?
Oh, sometimes, but at other times it is good to be a long way from home.
Thomas, when you’ve got a load of gigs, how do you keep your voice in good nick?
I never had a problem with that, the voice is always fit. A lot of Whisky is doing a good job.
Would you say you have a close relationship with your fans?
Yes I think so, on most concerts I’m doing the merchandise for myself. Most of the time I’m not backstage or something like that.So everybody who wants to can come around and talk to me.
What can we expect from the new (and fifth) album (Continue to Kill out April 4th)?
It is more evil than any other Debauchery record, it's got a lot of groove and brutality and blood. I think a lot of people will like the diversity of the record. There are some Hard Rock songs, some blastbeat neckbreakers and there is even a ballad on the album. Something for everyone.
Which of your tracks would you describe as the most headbanging?
Hard Rockin’ I think, it’s very old school, a riff like AC/DC or Krokus, a lot of groove and a catchy refrain. Just put up the volume and open up a beer.
OK, to finish off tell us something interesting about Debauchery that nobody knows
ahm...I don't know anything interesting. Sorry for that, I'm drunken most of the time, so interesting things pass me by...
